Agatthiyar jnanam 5-5

Verse 5

Translation
It will enter ravi as the entity
It is not easy to describe, what will I say?
As the goodness, for the five states
The four-faced one, we said, look carefully
This is the best entity, see it with attention
O! o! O! What will I say, there is nothing to compare with it (allegory)
This is the new one (wonder), (those) who do not see the letter
Will degrade in like the fly that was tainted with honey.

Commentary:
Agatthiyar is telling Pulathiyar that all the entities will enter ravi or the surya mandala, surya nadi, the state of Aditya.  He adds that one cannot describe this in words the process that the five, the elements, the divinities, the qualities, breaths and so on go through to become a singularity.  The four-faced one refers to Sadasiva.  Actually Sadasiva has five faces, Isana, Thathpurusha, Vamadeva, Aghora and Sathyojatha.  Among these the Sathyojatha faces up.  So the Siddhas see only the four faces.  Hence, Agatthiyar is saying that he is talking about the four-faced one.  Irrespective of any deity we pray to, it is Sadasiva who receives the offerings.  The four faces represent the four states of consciousness, wakeful, dream, deep sleep and turiya while the fifth face, Sathyojatham represents the fifth state the turyathitha

Agatthiyar tells Pulaithyar to see all these carefully as there is nothing that he could quote as an allegory or a comparison to make it clear.  This is a unique process without another like it. Hence, he calls this a wonder.  However, those who do not see it, the letter, the omkara, will discredit, it. Their behavior will be like a fly that fell into honey.  It will not know the taste of honey.  It does not taste it as it is busy trying to get out of the honey.  Hence, it will talk as if it is bad.  People who do not understand it will say that kundalini yoga is dangerous and one should not engage in it as it will cause destruction.  They are like the fly who do not understand its greatness.

Translation:
This method of self became known
They call it mother.  Dismiss the ignoramous
If you say king will he come? Look with focus
This indescribable essence, has been discussed
See the great souls who are like the sky
Saluting them daily, with happiness
The three drinks, Isa
Told Parvathi, winning the prize.

Commentary:
Agathiyar calls the method of vasi yogam that he has described as the method of “self”.  He says that it is also called the mother which may mean mother Kundalini and thus kundalini yogam.  He tells Pulathiyar to not pay attention to the ignoramus who only talk about it.  He says if you say “king” will he come?  One has to seek the king, he will not come.  Similarly, there is no point in talking about the yoga, one has to practice it.  He tells Pulathiyar to watch souls who have perfected it and become an expert in it.  He advises Pulathiyar to approach such great souls daily and salute them with happiness.  Thus we learn that this method should be practiced under an expert’s supervision.   Agatthiyar says that Isa who has won over the three drinks, kamapal, kanal pal and vamapal spoke about this to Parvathi.

Translation:
It became the microcosm (pinda) the macrocosm (andam)
Are all amazement.  Your silence.  What can I say
See the macrocosm, that became so
The Ravi (sun) and madhi (moon) will appear like oceans
Entering within the guru deeksha
The body became permanent, there is no formlessness in it
All the vital breaths (vayu) entered within the ravi and madhi
And got contained.  See it.  It is the heart only, isn’t it.

Commentary:
Agatthiyar is talking about the state at the ajna chakra.  Following the dasa deeksha or akara and ukara deeksha the next one that a sadhaka goes through is the guru deeksha.  Guru means that which dispels darkness.  Here the darkness of limitedness is dispelled and the yogin realizes his all-pervasive nature.  Agatthiyar says that the pinda or the body became so, became unlimited universal body which encompasses everything.  This is the macrocosm or the anda.  Thus, pindam became andam.  This is the state of silence or maunam, the state preceding manifestation, the energy state. This experience occurs at the ajna.  Agatthiyar talks about ravi and madhi next.  Generally these mean the sun and the moon respectively.  It also means the pingala and ida nadi respectively, the right and the left eye.  The yogin enters the state of total awareness which is the state of guru.  Agathiyar says that the body that became so turned out to be a permanent body.  We should remember here that he is not referring to the material body. Tirumular, in his Tirumandiram talks about five types of bodies.  They are sthula or gross, sukshma or subtle, athi sukshma or supra subtle, kaarana or causal, maha kaarana or supra causal bodies.  A body is that which provides a locus to the soul.  Here Agathiyar is talking about the maha kaarana sarira which is the everlasting, permanent body that includes all the manifestation.  This body is energy, which is beyond the three states of with form, formless-form and formless.  All the vital airs- the five primary ones, prana, apana, vyana, samana and udhana, and the ten secondary ones, nagan koorman, devadhatthan, kirikaran and dhananjayan merge within the two nadis.  These breaths perform various functions in the body, including its destruction.  Thus, the body goes beyond the influence of these airs and becomes a permanent one.  Agatthiyar calls this state as “ullam” or heart.

The heart that Agatthiyar refers to is not the physical part in our body.   When the word is split as ul+am it means the Divine, akara, in its energy state established within.  We see explanations of this heart in Bruhad aranyaka Upanishad as the basis for the divinities that emerge in all directions, it is the Brahman (3.9, 19-25 and 4.1.7).  Thus, Agatthiyar’s ullam is the equivalent of hridaya that is explained elaborately in Upanishads and Rig Veda.

Translation:
Listen to the way, the eight and two came together
It came to you, see it happily
Listen to the method.  It became appu in the place of uppu (ukara became akara)
This condensation is difficult to see
Listen to the state, see the locus
The ten dhiksha became stable
Listen to the procedure, if you conquer it for a year
Wonder!  All the worlds became within him.

Commentary:
Agatthiyar describes the dasa deeksha as that where the akara remains in the place of ukara. Akara is the Divine, ukara is the soul.  Thus, dasa deeksha is where the jiva becomes Siva.  Agatthiyar says that in the place of uppu or salt appu or water remained.  When the jive merges with Siva only Siva, the akara, the appu, remains. There is no more distinction as salt and water, only water is seen with the salt merged seamlessly.  Agatthiyar says this is the “surrukkam” or becoming the summary, the essence or concentration.  He tells Pulathiyar to look at the locus where this happens.   This union is experienced in samadhi.  He adds further that if one manages to practice this for a year then all the worlds will come within him.  He will stop identifying himself with the limited body.  He will become all pervasive.

Agatthiyar jnanam 5-1

Translation:
The dhiksha marga containing the beginning (adhi), end (andham), truth (body/mei)
The blessed Pulathiya, listen to (me) say it.
Praise to the flame that is within the terminus which is Jyothi/the terminus of Jyothi.
I am uttering about akara and ukara
It is the meaning/entity of the vedi andha kamalam (the lotus the terminus of transformation)
The conclusion of Vedanta is eight and two.
See with awareness the dhiksha which is Jyothi
With the satyam not failing you.

Commentary:
Agatthiyar’s composition jnanachurukkam 5 or the essence of jnana 5 contains details about dhiksha. The word dhiksha means initiation. It is the starting point for a sadhaka who has embarked on a journey towards a specific goal. The goal here is divine consciousness. The Tamil Siddhas call the dhiksha for that as dasa dhiksha or dhiksha of ten. There are different interpretations for this ten. Arunachala Guru in his composition Nijananda bodham explains it as ten steps.

In the first dhiksha the dirty waters in the body escape through the hair follicles. In the second, the vatha, pitha and kapha leave. In the third, old, dirty blood leaves. In the fourth, the skin peals like the snake molting its skin. In the fifth, another layer leaves, the body becomes red in hue, the five deities grant all the wishes. In the sixth, another layer leaves. The sushumna opens. Clairvoyance occurs. In the seventh, the covering becomes white and loosens out, the body will shine like a flame. In the eighth, the body will be lifted high up. Enchantment occurs. Transmigration will be possible. In the ninth, body will shine like million suns. Ashta maha siddhi will be attained. Celestials will serve the person. In the tenth, svarupa siddhi will be attained. A knife cannot cut the body which shines like a lamp. Aging, disease and death will not occur. Thus, the ten dhiksha seem to different stages in spiritual progress. Besides these there are separate dhiksha to cross the state of Sakthi and that of Siva.

In this verse the dasa dhiksha or initiation of ten refers to something else. The letter a and u in Tamil represent the numbers 8 and 2. Thus akara and ukara, together constitute 10 or dasam. It follows now that the dasa dhiksha is actually the akara and ukara dhiksha that would lead to the ultimate state of Param. This initiation transforms the material body into body of light.

Agatthiyar begins this composition with the expression “aadhi andha mei niraindha dheekshai margam.” This can be interpreted in several ways. Mei means truth as well as body. It may mean the path involving the body which contains the body’s beginning and end, or the state preceding its emergence and dissolution or death. Aadhi andham also refers to the Divine who took the form of the body to remain in the manifested world. Thus, the body, mei is filled with aadhi and andham or the Divine who is the beginning and end of manifestation. The Divine is also the truth, mei. The dheeksha margam is nothing but the truth, the mei which is aadhi andham.

The state of Jyothi or effulgence is not the ultimate state. The Divine exists in the three states, with form, without form and in formless-form. The jyothi or flame represents the formless form of the Divine. However, it is still a manifested state and so a sadhaka should transcend it and realize the formless state of the Divine.

Sathyam is also truth. Sath means that which remains unchanged and hence is the truth. Anything that changes is not truth as it can be one way at one time and in another way at another time. Thus, that which is unchanging is sathyam. Agatthiyar tells Pulathiyar to understand all these so that the truth about the nature of everything does not fail him, that the Divine does not fail him.
