Agatthiyar jnanam 5-1

Commentary:
Agatthiyar’s composition jnanachurukkam 5 or the essence of jnana 5 contains details about dhiksha. The word dhiksha means initiation. It is the starting point for a sadhaka who has embarked on a journey towards a specific goal. The goal here is divine consciousness. The Tamil Siddhas call the dhiksha for that as dasa dhiksha or dhiksha of ten. There are different interpretations for this ten. Arunachala Guru in his composition Nijananda bodham explains it as ten steps.

In the first dhiksha the dirty waters in the body escape through the hair follicles. In the second, the vatha, pitha and kapha leave. In the third, old, dirty blood leaves. In the fourth, the skin peals like the snake molting its skin. In the fifth, another layer leaves, the body becomes red in hue, the five deities grant all the wishes. In the sixth, another layer leaves. The sushumna opens. Clairvoyance occurs. In the seventh, the covering becomes white and loosens out, the body will shine like a flame. In the eighth, the body will be lifted high up. Enchantment occurs. Transmigration will be possible. In the ninth, body will shine like million suns. Ashta maha siddhi will be attained. Celestials will serve the person. In the tenth, svarupa siddhi will be attained. A knife cannot cut the body which shines like a lamp. Aging, disease and death will not occur. Thus, the ten dhiksha seem to different stages in spiritual progress. Besides these there are separate dhiksha to cross the state of Sakthi and that of Siva.

In this verse the dasa dhiksha or initiation of ten refers to something else. The letter a and u in Tamil represent the numbers 8 and 2. Thus akara and ukara, together constitute 10 or dasam. It follows now that the dasa dhiksha is actually the akara and ukara dhiksha that would lead to the ultimate state of Param. This initiation transforms the material body into body of light.

Agatthiyar begins this composition with the expression “aadhi andha mei niraindha dheekshai margam.” This can be interpreted in several ways. Mei means truth as well as body. It may mean the path involving the body which contains the body’s beginning and end, or the state preceding its emergence and dissolution or death. Aadhi andham also refers to the Divine who took the form of the body to remain in the manifested world. Thus, the body, mei is filled with aadhi and andham or the Divine who is the beginning and end of manifestation. The Divine is also the truth, mei. The dheeksha margam is nothing but the truth, the mei which is aadhi andham.

The state of Jyothi or effulgence is not the ultimate state. The Divine exists in the three states, with form, without form and in formless-form. The jyothi or flame represents the formless form of the Divine. However, it is still a manifested state and so a sadhaka should transcend it and realize the formless state of the Divine.

Sathyam is also truth. Sath means that which remains unchanged and hence is the truth. Anything that changes is not truth as it can be one way at one time and in another way at another time. Thus, that which is unchanging is sathyam. Agatthiyar tells Pulathiyar to understand all these so that the truth about the nature of everything does not fail him, that the Divine does not fail him.
