213. Worship is not visiting temples or reciting Devaram and Thiruvachakam!

Verse 213

நில்லாப்பா புலத்தியனே இன்னங் கேளு

நேமத்தோ டிருப்பாரோ நல்லோரோதான்

செல்லப்பா கோவில் குளம்....

அல்லப்பா திருவாசம் தேவாரம்தான்

அர அரா மணி ஓசை சம்பத் தோரே

Translation:

Stop Pulatthiya! Hear some more

With they be austere?  Are they good natured?

Go to temples and tanks….

Daily worship of linga preceded by sacred bathing and sacred waters

This is not Devaram or Tiruvaachakam

Ara araa! The sound of the bell, those who are wealthy.

Commentary:

Agatthiyar says that worship of the Divine is not visiting temples or sacred water bodies.  It is not reciting Devaram or Tiruvaachakam or ringing the bell, that is performing rituals.

The term tevaaram in Tamil is usually interepreted as Deva aaram or the necklace or jewel of the Lord.  Thiruvaachakam was composed by Saint Manickavachakar.  The saying, “if one does not melt hearing the verses of Tiruvaachakam one will not melt with love for anything” is well known. 

இப்பாடலில் அகத்தியர் இறைவனை வழிபடுவது என்பது கோயில் குளத்திற்குப் போவதோ தேவாரம் திருவாசகம் ஓதுவதோ மணியடித்து சடங்குகளைச் செய்வதோ அல்ல என்று கூறத்தொடங்குகிறார்.
