222. Markandeyan's report on pralaya

Verse 222

மகிக்ஷியுடன் மார்க்கண்டர் வாராய்க் கண்ணே

வரலாறு நீஎனமாய் அறிவாய் சொல்வாய்

சுகக்ஷியுடன் கற்பாதி யுகங்கள் தோறும்

சூட்சம்இந்த மாலோன்தன் வயத்தில் சேர்வேன்

அகக்ஷியுடன் ஆல் இலைமேல் இருப்பாரையா

அப்போது இவரிடத்தில் எல்லா ஞாயம்

இகக்ஷியுடன் இவர்க்குப் பின் எவரோ காணேன்

இவ்வார்த்தை நானறிவேன் அவரைக் கேளீர்.

Translation:

Markandeya, happily, please come my beloved

How did you know about this history?  Please tell

Comfortably through the eons

I will go back in a subtle form to the stomach of Maal

He will remain over the banyan leaf, with everything inside

At that time, with him, all the rules

I do not see anyone other than him

I know these words, you please ask him.

Commentary:

The episode of Markandeya witnessing the pralaya or the great deluge appears in several puranas.  Mahabharata, Padma purana, Bhagavatha purana, Skanda purana, Vayu purana and Markandeya Purana have accounts of Markandeya about the great deluge.  The story differs in these puranas with the central theme, that Markandeya witnessed the whole world being inundated by floods and that a child lying on a banyan leaf floats on the waters with everything contained within himself.  In the Markandeya purana the sage says that during the deluge all the souls lose only their body. The fruits of their action remain and when the world is created again, they are awarded lived that commensurate with their previous actions.  Agatthiyar’s verse seems to reflect this idea.  Here Markandeya says that he saw everything abiding with in Vishnu and all the ‘jnaaya’ or actions and their consequences remain with him.

பிரளயத்தைப் பற்றி மார்க்கண்டேயர் கூறிய விவரங்கள் மகாபாரதம், பத்ம புராணம், பாகவதபுராணம், ஸ்கந்த புராணம் வாயு புராணம் மற்றும் மார்க்கண்டேய புராணம் போன்ற பல புராணங்களில் காணப்படுகின்றன. இந்த விவரங்கள் ஒவ்வொரு புராணத்திலும் சிறிது மாறுபட்டாலும் அது கூறும் பொதுவான விஷயம், விஷ்ணு பிரளயத்தின்போது ஆலிலையில் சிறு குழந்தையின் வடிவில் துயில் கொள்கிறார், அவரது வயிற்றில் அனைத்தும் அடங்குகின்றன, ஜீவன்களின் உடல்தான் இவ்வாறு அடங்குகிறது அவர்களது கர்மங்களும் அவற்றின் பலன்களும் மறைவதில்லை.  அவர்கள் மீண்டும் பிறவி எடுக்கும்போது அவர்களது ஜன்மங்கள் அவர்களது கர்மத்துக்கு ஏற்ற வகையில் ஏற்படுகின்றன, என்பது போன்ற விவரங்கள் இவையனைத்திலும் பொதுவாகக் காணப்படுகின்றன.   அகத்தியரின் இப்பாடல் இந்தக் கருத்தைத்தான் பிரதிபலிக்கிறது.  மார்கண்டேயர் தான் பிரளயத்தின்போது அனைத்தையும் பார்த்ததாகக் கூறுகிறார்.
