302. Kaalai, maalai, thaanam

Verse 302

Translation:
If asked what is jnana, it is the wisdom of the whorl
After establishing this, what is wisdom. Morning and evening,
The worldly, thinking it lowly,
Died.  This is the action which gladdened the great souls.
What is ‘taanam’ (philanthropy/self, aham)? This is the Brahmam which remained as Self/aham
This is your eternal form that arose in you,
Drink, the best drink is the ‘muppaal’
You see and realize, the vital air/morning, Siva’ garland/ evening of consciousness, is this.

Commentary:
This verse has interesting meanings for the words ‘kaalai and maalai’. Kaali, generally means day and maalai, the evening. It also means the foot and Mal or the embodiment of maya. Kaalai also means vital breath. Agatthiyar says that the wisdom offered by the meijnanam is the supreme wisdom. Worldly people thoughly only about the lowly ‘kaalai and maalai’ the ordinary day and evening. In the end they meet their death as their lifespan marked by ‘kaalai and maali’ gets exhausted. It may also mean that they thought lowly about the vital breath or the sacred feet of the Lord and about Maal or the one who controls the maya and met their death in the end. However, great souls realize what ‘kaalai and maalai’ mean and they “consume” or experience the triple paal. Triple paal means pranayama where the breath flows through the surya, chandra and agni nadi. This process will take them towards a deathless state, a state beyond time and its divisions. They will realize the ‘taan+am’ or the nature of aham or Self. There is a play of the word ‘taanam’ which normally means philanthropy. thaanam also means one's locus, sthaanam. The soul's locus is at the supreme space or vetta veli. This is going beyond the limitations of space. When one realizes one’s true nature, about aham, one will realize the nature of the prana or ‘kaal’ and the nature of ‘siva maalai’ which means the garland of consciousness, the garland of letters or matruka mala which indicates different principles and depicted on the six cakras. It is also the garland, the prana and kundalini sakthi that travels from muladhara to sahasrara and returns, like a garland. It may also mean siva's maya that causes the limitations of time and space.
