308. What is good?

Verse 308

நரகம் அதிலே விழுந்து போக நன்றோ

நல்லபதம் முத்தி பெற்று இருக்க நன்றோ

சிறிதான குகைவாசல் விழுகல் நன்றோ

சிவ ஞானம் முத்தி பெற்று இருக்க நன்றோ

பரிவான வாசிதனில் ஏற நன்றோ

பாழான உலகமதில் இருக்க நன்றோ

தெரியாத பிள்ளைகளே தெரிந்து பாரீர்

சிவசிவா புலத்தியனே செப்பினேனே

Translation:

Is it good to fall into hell

Is it good to remain in the good locus attaining mukti

Is it good to fall into the small entrance of the cave

Is it good to remain attaining the Siva jnana mukti

Is it good to climb in the merciful vaasi

Is it good to remain in the world which is a paazh

The ignorant children, see it with knowledge

Siva sivaa!  Pulatthiya!  I told this.

Commentary:

Agatthiyar asks Pulatthiyar what is good, is it good to fall into hell, into the cave of birth, be in this world which is nothing but destruction or a space created by maya or whether it is good to attain siva jnana mukti, to climb the vaasi and thus attain the locus of realization.  In the end Agatthiyar says “Children! See what is good and follow it, I have said everything here”.

இப்பாடலில் அகத்தியர் புலத்தியரிடம் எது நல்லது என்று பல விஷயங்களைக் கூறி கேட்கிறார்.  நரகத்தில் வீழ்வது நல்லதா, குகைவாயில் விழுவது நல்லதா, பாழான உலகில் இருப்பது நல்லதா அல்லது வாசியில் ஏறி சிவ ஞான பத முக்தியைப் பெறுவது நல்லதா என்று கேட்டுவிட்டு “பிள்ளைகளே எது நல்லது என்று நான் இங்கே கூறியவற்றைக் கொண்டு தேறுங்கள்” என்று இப்பாடலை முடிக்கிறார்.
