272. No use reading this book if there is no guru

Verse 272

படித்ததினால் என்ன பலன் நாய்க்குத் தேங்காய்

பலிதம் உண்டோ பாவிகட்குப் பலியாதப்பா

குடித்ததினால் என்ன பலன் சாராயத்தை

குரு நிஷ்டை அறியாற்குக் கூடுமோதான்

இடித்ததனால் பலன் உண்டோ மழை பெய்யாமல்

ஏமாந்தால் ஒன்றும் இல்லை எண்ணிப் பாரு

படித்ததினால் பலன் உண்டோ குருயில்லாமல்

பூரணத்திலே கூடி பொருந்தி வாழே.

Translation:

What is the use of having studied, a coconut for a dog

Is there any use for it, it will not be fruitful for sinners, son!

What is the use of drinking toddy

Will it be fruitful for those who insult the guru?

What is the point of a thunder, if it does not rain.

There is no point in getting disappointed

Is there any benefit in studying, without a guru?

Merge with the fully complete and live fittingly.

Commentary:

Agatthiyar impresses upon us that there is no use in studying all these lofty principles if one does not have a guru who can explain the esoteric principles.  A dog cannot derive any benefit from a coconut unless someone breaks it and gives it the pulp.  Unlike the monkey that has hands to break a coconut the dog cannot break it, itself.  If one drinks alcohol and insults the guru in his state of stupor then there is no use reading all these philosophies.  This is like a loud thunder which is useless if it does not result in rain.  It is mere noise.  Hence, there is no point in studying the meijnanam if one is not blessed with a guru who can explain these principles and help one put it to practice.

மெய்ஞ்ஞானத்தைப் பற்றிய படிப்பறிவு மட்டும் பயனில்லை, ஒரு தகுந்த குருவிடமிருந்து இவற்றிற்கான விளக்கத்தைப் பெறவேண்டும் என்று அகத்தியர் இப்பாடலில் வலியுறுத்துகிறார்.  ஒரு தேங்காயால் ஒரு நாய்க்கு எவ்வித பலனுமில்லை.  குரங்கைப் போல நாயால் தேங்காயை உடைத்துத் தின்ன முடியாது.  அதை ஒருவர் உடைத்துத் தந்தால்தான் நாயால் சாப்பிடமுடியும்.  சாராயத்தைக் குடித்துவிட்டு குருவை நிந்தனை செய்பவனுக்கு இந்த நூலால் பயனில்லை.  மழை பெய்யாமல் இடி மட்டும் இடித்தால் பயன் ஏதுமில்லை.  அதனால் இந்த நூலை  வெறும் ஏட்டறிவுக்காகப் படித்தால் பலனில்லை, ஒரு குருவின் உதவியினுடன் இதன் பொருளை உணர்ந்துகொண்டு இறைவனுடன் ஒன்றவேண்டும் என்று அகத்தியர் கூறுகிறார்.
