34. How to serve a guru

Verse 34

கொள்ளப்பா பன்னிரண்டு வருஷ காலம்

குருபுத்திர நான் என்றே கூறு கூறு

கள்ளப்பா வாக்கப்பா வென்றிடாதே

கருத்துகந்து குருபாதம் கட்டிக் காரு

விள்ளப்பா ஒருநாளும் விள்ளார் விள்ளார்

வேளைஉண்டு நாழி உண்டு விளம்புவார்கள்

தள்ளப்பா என்றக்கால் தள்ளிப் போவார்

தவறாத சீஷன் என்றால் திடம் சொல்வாரே

                               

Translation:

Do this for twelve years

Say "I am the son of the guru"

Words are fallacies, win them (do not attempt to win them)

Protect and nurture the pleasant sacred feet of the guru

They will not reveal this easily.

They will say it at the right time, right moment.

When you say, "move" they will go away.

If it is the deserving disciple they will reveal the idea.

Commentary:

Agatthiyar tells Pulatthiyan to perform guru's service for twelve years with the feeling that he is the son of the guru.  He tells him to not argue and pay attention to the verbal instructions but to understand what they real mean, the essence (karutthu). He also advises that the sacred feet of the guru should be held with great respect.  The guru will not reveal the secret instruction easily.  They will impart the knowledge at the right time and the right moment.  If they are treated disrespectfully, they will go away.  However, for a sincere disciple they will explain the definitude.

புலத்தியர் குரு சேவையை பன்னிரண்டு வருடங்கள் விசுவாசத்துடன் செய்ய வேண்டும் என்றும் ஒரு தந்தையை எவ்வாறு ஒரு மகன் தனது செயல்களால் மகிழ்விப்பானோ பெருமைப்படுத்துவானோ அதைப் போல குருவைப் பெருமைப்படச் செய்ய வேண்டும். குருவின் வார்த்தைகளை வாதிட்டு எதிர்க்காமல் அவற்றின் உட்பொருளைப் புரிந்துகொள்ள வேண்டும்.  குருவும் எளிதில் உபதேசத்தைத் தந்துவிட மாட்டார்.  சரியான காலம் வந்தபோதுதான் அதை அளிப்பார்.   அவரைத் தள்ளிப்போ என்று மரியாதைக் குறைவாக நடத்தினால் அவர் அங்கிருந்து அகன்றுவிடுவார்.  ஆனால் தகுந்த சீடனுக்கு அவர் திடத்தை, உண்மையைக் கூறுவார் என்கிறார் அகத்தியர்.
