215. Behaviour of five types of Guru!

Verse 215

பஞ்ச குரு நடத்தை

இருப்பாரே இன்னொருவர் வாரும் என்றால்

இவ்வேளை சமையமல்ல தள்ளிப் போவார்

குறிப்பாகப் புலத்தியனே நன்றாய்க் கேளு

குருவான பஞ்சகுற நிர்ணயந்தான்

பருப்போடே நெய்கலந்த பொங்கல் போலும்

பஞ்ச குரு நிர்ணயத்தைப் படித்தேன் ஐயா

திருப்போடே சிமிள்குலுங்க இடை தள்ளாடி

சின்மயத்தில் நின்று மணி செப்பினாளே

Translation:

There is another one.  When said, “Please come”

He will go away saying “This is not the right time”

Pulatthiya listen carefully

The determination of the five gurus

Like the gruel with millet and clarified butter

I read about the way to determine the five gurus

With turns and shakes and with the waist faultering

Mani (Manonmani) told me while remaining in chinmaya.

Commentary:

Agatthiyar starts off with saying that another type of guru will diplomaticall avoid the issue of visiting a temple so that he does not offend anyone.  He will say that this is not the right time.  Agatthiyar says that he learnt about the five types of gurus from Sakti, Manonmani.  He learnt it from her as clearly as the common gruel that is made with rice, millet and clarified butter.

அகத்தியர் தனது உபதேசத்தை முதலில் மற்றொரு விதமான குருவைப் பற்றிக் கூறுவதாகத் தொடங்குகிறார்.  இந்த வித குரு தான் கோவிலுக்குப் போவேன் அல்லது மாட்டேன் என்று கூறாமல் “அதற்கான சமயம் இதுவல்ல” என்று கூறி நழுவிவிடுவார்.  இவ்வாறு அகத்தியர் தான் ஐந்து வகை குருக்களைக் கண்டுபிடிக்கும் விதத்தைக் கற்றுக்கொண்டேன் என்று கூறுகிறார்.  தான் இதை நெய்யும் பருப்பும் சேர்ந்த பொங்கலைப்போல அறிந்தேன் என்று கூறுகிறார். இதைத் தனக்கு மனோன்மணித் தாய் சின்மயத்தில் இருந்தபடி கற்றுக்கொடுத்தாள் என்றும் அவர் கூறுகிறார்.
