143. Beware of those who pretend to be gurus

பாவிகாள் உங்களுக்கு அமைந்த வாழ்க்கைப்

பலகாலம் தந்தை தாய் செய்த வாழ்க்கை

சாவியாய்ப் போனதிந்த பாவி மாரைத்

தள்ளிவிட்டு குருக்களிட செய்கை கேளு

கோவியாய்த் திரியாதே புலத்தியோனே

குருக்கள் என்று வேடமிட்ட குறையைக் கேளு

ஆவியாய்ச் சகல நூல் படித்துக் கற்று

அர அரா காயாச வேடத்தொரே

Translation:

Sinners!  The life you got

Is that created by the mother and father over a long time

These folks who have become useless

Pushing them away listen to the actions of the Gurus

Do not roam around angrily, Pulatthiya

Listen to the actions of those who adorn the garb of a guru

Reading all the books and learning them

Arahara!  They are those who adorn the saffron robe.

Commentary:

Agatthiyar is starting to describe charlatans who pose as gurus.  He tells Pulatthiya that the life one lives is that created by his parents.  Hence, one should not waste one’s time with those who only live the life that their parents gave them.  One should seek the true purpose of life.  However, one has to guard against those who pose as gurus.

குருக்கள் என்று வேஷமிடும் மக்களைப் பற்றி அகத்தியர் இப்பாடலில் கூற ஆரம்பிக்கிறார்.  ஒருவர் வாழும் வாழ்க்கை அவரது தாய் தந்தையர் அளித்தது.  அதனால் உலக வாழ்க்கையில் மூழ்கிக் கிடப்போரைத் தள்ளிவிட்டு உண்மையைத் தேட வேண்டும் என்கிறார் அகத்தியர்.  ஆனால் உண்மையைத் தொடும்போது ஒருவர் பொய்க்குருக்களைக் கண்டறியவேண்டும்.  அவர்களைக் காஷாய வேடத்தோர் என்கிறார் அகத்தியர்.
