142. Can a fire turn into a blaze without a spark?

Verse 142

தாவென்றால் கை இல்லான் தாவப் போகும்

சமத்தில்லான் போர்க்களத்தில் சண்ணப் போமோ

போவென்றால் செவிடனுக்குக் கேட்குமோ சொல்

பொறியில்லா அக்கினியும் வளருமோ சொல்

ஏவென்றால் கால் இல்லான் ஏகு வானே

ஏச்சென்றால் செய்யாமல் ஏச்சும் ஆமோ

பாவென்றால் ஆகாசம் பாவுமோ சொல்

பார்த்தறிந்து கேளாத பாவி மாரே

Translation:

If asked, “give” can the hand-less one give?

Can the one who is not smart go to fight in the battlefield

If said, “Go” can a deaf person hear it

Will the fire grow without a spark, Tell me,

If said, “Go” can the one without legs go

If you said, “Insult” will it become an insult

If bid to spread can the space spread

The sinners who have not seen, realized and listened to it.

Commentary:

In this verse Agatthiyar is telling Pulatthiyar that one cannot accomplish an action unless one has the capacity to do it.  A legless man cannot walk if bid, a deaf person cannot hear, a fire cannot grow into a blaze without a spark.  Similarly, one cannot attain wisdom unless one develops the capacity to attain it.

இப்பாடலில் அகத்தியர் ஒருவர் தனது தகுதியை வளர்த்துக் கொண்டாலன்றி ஞானம் பெற முடியாது என்பதைப் பல்வேறு உதாரணங்களின் மூலம் காட்டுகிறார்.  காலில்லாதவனால் போக முடியாது, காதில்லாதவனால் கேட்கமுடியாது, பொறியில்லாமல் அக்னியால் எரிய முடியாது.  அது போல தேவையான தகுதியில்லாமல் ஒருவரால் ஞானம் பெற முடியாது.
