194. A guru's mode of upadesa!

Verse 194

காணப்பா அவர் மனது கனியக் காரு

கால்பிடித்து நீ கைபிடித்து நீ ஏவல் கேளு

தோணப்பா சந்தோஷம் வந்தபோது

சொல் எடுப்பார் அதுவேளை நீயும் பேசு

ஊணப்பா அவர் உரைக்கும் வார்த்தை எல்லாம்

ஓஓஓ தாசியைப் போல் பொறுக்கிச் சேரு

சாணப்பா வீண்வார்த்தைஅநேகம் சொல்வார்

சமயம் வந்தால் நிஜம் சொல்வார் கட்டிப் போடே

Translation:

See son, wait till his heart melts,

Press his feet and hands do his bidding

When he becomes happy, he will

Utter a word/will start speaking, you also speak at that time

Think deeply about his words/plant them deeply

O!O!O!  Pick them and collect them like a prostitute

Be careful son, he will say many useless words,

When the time comes, they will say the truth, tie it up tightly

Commentary:

This verse gives instructions on how to receive upadesa from a guru.  One has to wait patiently until the guru looks upon the disciple favorable.  The disciple should serve the guru sincerely and do all his bidding.  Then the guru will become happy and start talking.  One should not merely listen to him but clear one’s doubts also at that time.  One should plant the words of the guru deeply in one’s heart collecting them like a prostitute who desirously and ambitiously collects wealth from her benefactors.  However, one should be watchful of what the guru says.  He will say many useless things to test if the disciple has the discrimination and knowledge to identify the truth.  They do this also as a way of waiting for the right time to arrive so that the disciple is ready to receive the truth from the guru. When such a time comes they will say the  truth and the disciple should immediately hold on to it as if tying it up within himself.

ஒரு சீடன் எவ்வாறு குருவினிடமிருந்து உபதேசம் பெறவேண்டும் என்று அகத்தியர் இப்பாடலில் கூறுகிறார்.  ஒரு சீடன், பொறுமையுடனும் விசுவாசத்துடனும் குருவுக்குக் கைங்கர்யம் செய்ய வேண்டும்.  அவருக்குக் கால் பிடித்து கைபிடித்து சேவை செய்ய வேண்டும்.  அப்பொழுது அவரது மனம் கனிந்து பேச ஆரம்பிப்பார்.  அப்போது சீடன் கேட்பதோடு நிறுத்திக்கொள்ளாமல் தனது சந்தேகங்களையும் தீர்த்துக்கொள்ளவேண்டும்.  அவரது வார்த்தைகளை ஒரு தாசி தன்னை ஆதரிப்பவரிடமிருந்து எவ்வளது பேராசையுடன் பொருள்களைப் பொறுக்கிச் சேகரிப்பாளோ அதைப் போல குருவின் வார்த்தைகளைச் சேகரிக்கவேண்டும் என்கிறார் அகத்தியர்.  அப்போது குரு சீடனின் அறிவுத் திறனை, விவேகத்தைச் சோதனை செய்ய பல வீண் வார்த்தைகளைச் சொல்வார்.  (அந்த சீடன் பக்குவம் பெற்று உண்மையைக் கண்டுணர அதை ஒரு பயிற்சசியாகவே செய்வார்.)  சரியான சமயம் வரும்போது அவர் தனது உபதேசத்தை அருளுவார்.  அதை அந்த சீடன் தன்னுள் கட்டி வைப்பதைப் போல ஆழமாகப் ஊணிக்கொள்ள வேண்டும்.
