187. Behavior of the wise

Verse 187

கொள்வாரே குறும்பர் வந்து எதுத்தாரானால்

குறியவர்கள் சொன்னாலு மிவரும் சொல்லார்

கள்வாரே கள்ளர் வந்து எதுத்தாரானால்

கையில் ஒன்றும் இல்லை என்று உதறிப்போவார்

தள்வாரே சமையமதம் கொண்டோர் வந்தால்

சாத்திரமும் நான் அறியேன் சோற்று வேஷம்

விள்வாரே குறியாளர் வந்தாரானால்

மெல்லவே ஓர் வசனம் அம்பும் ஆச்சே

Translation:

If the troublesome ones oppose, they will listen

Even if they talk about the signs, these people (good ones) will not talk

They will hide it if thieves come and fight

They will show empty hand and go away shaking it

They will push it away if religious fanatics approach

“I do not know sastra, I am adorning a garb only to get food”

They will say.  When the right person, one with focus comes

Quietly they will say a statement which will be like an arrow.

Comaptmentary:

Agatthiyar describes a wise soul some more here.  Such people will avoid arguing with trouble makers, thieves and religious fanatics.  They will complete deny any knowledge or wisdom.  However, if the right person comes they will say only one statement.  That statement will be so sharp and pointed that it will reach the target, show wisdom, like an arrow.

நல்ல குணங்களைக் கொண்டோரைப் பற்றி அகத்தியர் மேலும் கூறுகிறார்.  அத்தகையோர் கலகக்காரர்கள், சமய மதம் பிடித்தோர், ஞானத்தையும் புத்தகங்களையும் திருட முனைவோர் ஆகியோர் வந்தார் அவர்களுடன் வெட்டிப் பேச்சு பேச மாட்டார்கள், விவாதிக்க மாட்டார்கள்.  தம்மிடம் ஒன்றுமில்லை என்று கையை விரித்துவிட்டு அங்கிருந்து அகன்றுவிடுவார்கள். ஆனால் உண்மையான விருப்பத்தையும் ஏகாக்கிரக சிந்தனையையும் கொண்டவர்கள் வந்தால் அவர்களுக்கு மெல்ல, ஒரு உபதேசத்தை அருளுவார்கள்.  அந்த வார்த்தை அம்பைப் போல தனது இலக்கை அடையும், ஞானத்தைக் காட்டும்.
