195. Display your knowledge at the right time, the guru will be ecstatic!

Verse 195

போடப்பா நாள் தோறும் பல பேச்சுள்ளே

பொறுக்குள்ள வார்த்தை கண்டால் பொரிக்க முட்டை

நாடப்பா கோழியைப் போல் மனதின் உள்ளே

நல்ல குணம் வந்த தென்றால் சொல்வேன் என்பார்

ஆடப்பா அப்போது மறந்திடாதே

அந்நேரம் முட்டைதனை அவித்துப் போடு

தோடப்பா இவனல்லோ பிள்ளை என்று

தூக்கி முத்தாடுவார்கள் குருவும் தாமே

Translation:

Lay it son, daily, within the several conversations

If you see a word that should be picked, the egg that should be hatched

Seek it within the heart like a hen

He will say, “If good qualities occur, I will tell,”

Dance son, do not forget then,

Boil the egg and display it at that time

Happily thinking, “He is the worthy son/person”

The guru will lift you and kiss you.

Commentary:

A guru offers knowledge to the disciple and waits to get feedback before he offers more.  Agatthiyar equates this knowledge to an egg.  One should collect this knowledge, the right words and place them in one’s heart for them to hatch.  Mere hearing of the guru’s words will not grant wisdom.  One should ruminate of those words and see the nuances and esoteric meanings hidden in them.  This is the process of boiling the egg.  When the right time comes, the disciple should talk about what he learnt from the guru as a way of feedback, to let the guru know that the knowledge was received and understood correctly.  This will gladden the guru immensely.  Agatthiyar says that the guru will be ecstatic with joy; he would kiss the disciple in his mirth.

                                    

ஒரு தேர்ந்த குரு தனது சீடனுக்கு சிறிது அறிவை முதலில் புகட்டுவார்.  பிறகு அந்த அறிவை அவன் சரியாக ஏற்றுக் கொண்டானா என்று பொறுத்திருந்து பார்ப்பார்.  அது அவனது வார்த்தைகளிலிருந்து புலப்படும்.  குரு அளிக்கும் ஞானத்தை அகத்தியர் முட்டை என்கிறார்.  ஒரு கோழி எவ்வாறு முட்டையைப் பாதுகாக்குமோ அதுபோல சீடன் குருவின் வார்த்தைகளைப் பாதுகாக்கவேண்டும்.  அதை மனதுள் இட்டு அதினுள் இருக்கும் சூட்சுமப் பொருட்களை உணர்ந்துகொள்ள வேண்டும். அதை அகத்தியர் ‘முட்டையை அவிக்க வேண்டும்’ என்று கூறுகிறார்.  தகுந்த சமயம் வரும்போது இந்த அவித்த முட்டையை அந்த சீடன் தனது குருவுக்குமுன் இட வேண்டும், அதாவது தான் எவ்வாறு கற்றுக் கொண்டிருக்கின்றோம் என்பதை அந்த குருவுக்குப் புலப்படுத்தவேண்டும்.  அதைக் கண்டு அந்த குரு பெரிதும் மகிழ்வார்.  ஆகா!  இவனல்லோ நல்ல பிள்ளை, இவனல்லோ நல்ல சீடன் என்று மனமகிழ்ந்து அவனைத் தூக்கி முத்தமிடுவார் என்று அகத்தியர் கூறுகிறார்.
