153. How should a disciple acquire knowledge from a guru

Verse 153         

கம்ப வருட மறியவும்

இருள் உண்டோ என்றுரைத்தீர் குருவே ஐயா

என்பெருமை என்பெருமை புகழ் கொண்டோரே

அருளான காயசித்தி அனந்தம் சொன்னீர்

அரஅரா வாசிசிவயோகம் சொன்னீர்

பொருளான பெண்களையும் தள்ளச் சொன்னீர்

பூரணமே பெண்ணாகப் புணரச் சொன்னீர்

சுருளாக எவரெவர்கள் செய்ய லாகும்

சூக்ஷம் இதை இவர் இவரென்று உரைத்திடீரே

Translation:

“Is there darkness?” you asked, Sir, My Preceptor!

What a glory!  What a glory!  You, glorious One!

You told us about the eternal kaya siddhi

Ara hara!  You talked about vãsi and sivayogam.

You told us to discard considering women as sexual objects

You told us to have intercourse with the fully complete as the lady

You can do this, the method of the whorl

Please point out these subtleties as “those”.

Commentary:

Agatthiyar remarked in the previous verse that there is no darkness for one who has lit the lamp of supreme consciousness.  Pulatthiyar is referring to this in this verse.  He says that Agatthiyar has described the kaya siddhi, vasi yogam and the sivayogam.  He also advised all to not seek women for physical pleasures but to merge with the Divine, the fully complete, the Purnam.  Now, Pulatthiyar is asking Agatthiyar to point out the actual details of kayasiddhi, the subtle esoteric steps. 

This verse shows us how a teacher imparts knowledge to his student.  A good teacher does not teach everything in the beginning itself.  He tells some information, waits for the student to understand it and come up with the right questions.  Only when he hears the right questions does the teacher teach the next step.  Hence, a disciple needs not only the capacity to absorb all that the teacher gives him but also the ability to ask appropriate questions.

அகத்தியர் முந்தைய பாடலில் விழிப்புணர்வு என்ற சுடர்மணியை ஏற்றியவுடன் இருள் என்பதே இல்லை என்று கூறினார்.  இப்பாடலில் புலத்தியர் அதை நினைவு கூறுகிறார்.  அதன் பிறகு அவர் இதுவரை அகத்தியர் காயசித்தி, வாசி/சிவயோகம் ஆகியவற்றைப் பற்றிப் பேசியுள்ளதாகவும் பெண்களை உடலின்பத்துக்காகத் தேடாமல் பூரணத்தை, பரவுணர்வு நிலையை அடைவதையே ஒருவர் தேடவேண்டும் என்றும் கூறியுள்ளதாகவும் புலத்தியர் இங்கு சொல்கிறார்.  அதன் பிறகு புலத்தியர் அகத்தியரிடம், அவர் இதுவரை கூறியுள்ள கூட்சுமமான விஷயங்களை “இவைதான்” என்று சுட்டிக் காட்டுமாறு வேண்டுகிறார். 

இப்பாடல் எவ்வாறு ஒரு சீடன் தனது குருவிடமிருந்து அறிவைப் பெறவேண்டும் என்று காட்டுகிறது.  குருவானவர் எடுத்தவுடனேயே எல்லா அறிவையும் புகட்டிவிடுவதில்லை.  அவர் கற்றுக் கொடுத்தவைகளைப் புரிந்து கொண்ட ஒரு சீடன் கேட்கும் கேள்விகளைத் தொடர்ந்தே அவர் அடுத்த கட்ட உபதேசத்த அருளுகிறார்.  அதனால் ஒரு சீடன் “கேள்வி ஞானத்தைப்” பெற்றிருந்தால் மட்டும் போதாது “கேள்வி கேட்கும் திறத்தையும்” பெற்றிருக்க வேண்டும்.
