77. Hiding the spear with a winnow...

Verse 77

சொன்னீரே என்குருவே அகத்து மூர்த்தி

சுளக்காலே ஆனைகுத்தி மறைத்தாப்போலும்

சொன்னீரே மந்திரத்தில் மாங்காய் சோர்ந்து

சூக்ஷமதாய் பூமியிலே விழுந்தாப் போலும்

சொன்னீரே தெரியாத பிள்ளை கேட்கில்

சூக்ஷத்தில் அடக்கிவிட்டீர் மௌன வாழ்வே

சொன்னீரே கொங்கணர்க்கு நிலையை இந்த

சுகம் போல சுளுவாகச் சொன்னீர் ஐயா

Translation:

You said my Guru, the Lord within,

Like hiding the spear that pierces the elephant with a winnow,

You said, like the mango tiring out

And falling on the ground through mantra

You said when the ignorant son asked

You contained it within the subtle, the life of silence

You told about Konkanar’s state

Very easily as if it is simple and pleasurable.

Commentary:

Pulatthiyar tells Agatthiyar that he has talked about a very difficult concept as if it is easy to comprehend.  He says that it was as if a spear that is big enough to pierce an elephant was hidden with a winnow. In ancient India they used several types of spears, iikutthi was to peirce a fly.  This was to check one’s power of concentration.  Aanai kutthi is a spear to pierce an elephant.  Pulatthiyar uses this as an example to convey that Agatthiyar was explaining a huge concept as if it is simple.  He also says that Agatthiyar conveyed the feeling that it is as simple as to make a mango fall from the tree through magic. 

அகத்தியர் ஒரு கடினமான விஷயத்தை மிக எளிதானதைப் போல் விளக்க முனைந்துள்ளதாக புலத்தியர் இப்பாடலில் கூறுகிறார்.  அது யானையைக் குத்தும் ஈட்டியை ஓர் முறத்தால் மறைக்க முனைவதைப் போல மந்திரத்தால் மாங்காயை விழச்செய்வதைப் போல உள்ளதாக இருக்கிறது என்கிறார் புலத்தியர்.  பழங்காலத்தில் இந்தியாவில் பலவித ஈட்டிகளைப் பயன்படுத்தினர்.  யானை குத்தி என்பது யானையை அடக்க உபயோகிக்கப்படுவது.  ஈகுத்தி என்பது ஈயைக் குத்தப் பயன்படுத்துவது.  அது மனக்குவிப்பை வளர்க்க உதவுவது.
