88. The locus of the five lettered mantra

Verse 88

கார் என்று சொன்னீரே கும்ப வாழ்வே

காலடிக்கே நமஸ்காரம் மகிழ்ந்தேன் உண்மை

சீர் என்ற அஞ்செழுத்தின் திறத்தைச் சொன்னீர்

சிவசிவா ஐஞ்செழுத்தின் பதிதான் எங்கே

தேர் என்றால் திருநாளைக் கண்டதாமோ

சிறுக்கி என்றால் அதிமோகம் தீர்ந்து போமோ

ஊர் என்றால் அகத்தாசை ஒழியலாமோ

உள்ளபடி அவர்கள் பதி உரைத்திடீரே

Translation:

You told me to hold it in the mind, The Life of the pot (kumba)

Obesience to your sacred feet, I am happy,

You told me the true glory, the capability of the five letters

Siva Siva where is the locus of the five letters?

If it is said chariot, does it mean having attended the chariot festival?

If it is said, “little woman” will desire be satisfied?

If it is said, “town” will the desire to possess a home disapper?

Please say the locus as it is.

Commentary:

In the first line Pulatthiyar addresses Agatthiyar as “Kumba vaazhve”.  One of the names of Agatthiyar is Kumbamuni.  The general interpretation for this name is that he was born in a pot.  However, the name makes one wonder whether it actually means "one who was born as a result of kumbaka or cessation of breath", that is, Agatthiyar is the supreme consciousness, the inner fire of kundalini conferred by kumbaka.   Pulatthiyar asks Agatthiyar about the place of the five lettered mantra.   He says, “Sir, you told me the greatness of the five letters but where is its locus?  If we say that we saw the chariot does it mean that we participated in the temple festival?  If we address a maiden by a nickname does it mean our desire was fulfilled?” 

இப்பாடலின் முதல் வரியில் புலத்தியர் அகத்தியரை “கும்ப வாழ்வே” என்று விளிக்கிறார்.  கும்பமுனி என்பது அகத்தியரின் மற்றொரு பெயர்.  அதற்கு அறிஞர்கள் அவர் கும்பத்தில் பிறந்தார் என்று பொருள் கூறுகின்றனர்.  ஆனால் அப்பெயர் அவர் கும்பக சித்தி பெற்றதால் ஏற்பட்டிருக்குமோ என்று தோன்றுகிறது. 

புலத்தியர் அகத்தியரிடம் நமசிவாயத்தின் பதி எங்கே என்று கேட்கிறார்.  அதை விளக்கும் விதமாக தேர் என்றால் திருவிழாவைப் பார்த்ததாகுமா, ஒரு பெண்ணைச் செல்லப்பெயர் இட்டு அழைத்தால் அவளிடம் சுகம் பெற்றதாகுமா என்று கேட்கிறார்.
